Who Gets The Pet In A Divorce??

No one is really sure why but the rate of divorcing partners fighting over their pets is climbing.

A survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that divorce lawyers are finding themselves handling pet custody cases more and more often.

These cases include dogs, cats and even birds!

Another inneresting statistic is that these pet custody cases are more common among same-sex marriages, civil unions and domestic partnerships.

An attorney said:

“Pet custody cases have grown as much as 15 percent in my office over the last five years.”

The attorney himself even shares custody of an 8-year-old dog with his ex-wife.

Another attorney said:

“Judges are viewing them more akin to children than dining room sets. They are recognizing that people have an emotional attachment to their animals.”

That’s definitely the right way to look at it.

But we’re wondering, who usually gets the pet?

“Whoever registers the dog can be considered the dog├óΓé¼Γäós owner for litigation purposes, and since you have to prove that you have a legal right to the dog, just like you├óΓé¼Γäód have to prove a legal right to a car, having the license is your best bet.”

So remember, if you liked it then you shoulda put a registration on it.
