Watch Lana Wachowski’s Inspiring Speech About Her Transgender Experience

Lana Wachowski, the director of Cloud Atlas, has not made a public appearance to promote her and brother Andy‘s films in 12 years.

While the filmmaker prefers anonymity, she decided it was finally time to talk about her private struggles that so many others go through too. She got a great opportunity in San Francisco recently when she was honored with the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award.

The “painfully shy” woman behind The Matrix took advantage of the attention to speak about her transgender experience that started when she was a young child in Catholic School and continues to this day.

Mixing humor and brutal honesty, she takes the audience on a walk in her shoes as she recounts the day she almost committed suicide, the day she came to terms with who she really was, the day her parents accepted her femininity and the day she decided to sacrifice her private civic life to make this world a better place for the entire LGBT community.

Take some time and watch the incredible speech (above). We promise you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and maybe grow a little bit as a person.

Most of all, you’ll be hoping that she makes these types of public appearances more often.
