Yep! This is happening, folks!
Orlando Bloom will play Romeo to Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad‘s Juliet in David Leveaux├óΓé¼Γäós Broadway production of Shakespeare├óΓé¼Γäós Romeo and Juliet!
With the Capulets cast as an African-American family and the Montagues as a heaping hand of vanilla wafers, the show will navigate within a re-imagined, interracial world! The producers revealed:
“While race defines the family lineages, the original cause of the ├óΓé¼╦£ancient quarrel├óΓé¼Γäó, passed down by successive generations to their young, has been lost to time. Shakespeare├óΓé¼Γäós dramatization of the original poem sets the two young lovers in a context of prejudice, authoritarian parents, and a never ending cycle of ├óΓé¼╦£revenge.├óΓé¼Γäó Against this background, the strength of their love changes the world.”
In addition to Orlando and Condola, Tony Award nominee Jayne Houdyshell will be playing the role of the Nurse, and fellow nominee Joe Morton will play Lord Capulet.
The show will hopefully open to the public on Sept. 19 as general admission tickets go on sale on the 8th.
