It looks like New Jersey is about to become the 14th United State to legalize same-sex marriage!!!
Today, Judge Mary Jacobson of the Mercer County Superior Court ruled that gay couples can marry in the Garden State starting October 21!
Judge Jacobson concluded that the rights given to gay couples under the state’s civil unions law are not equal to the federal benefits now granted to married gay couples, following the Supreme Court ruling from this summer!
According to Jacobson:
“The ineligibility of same-sex couples for federal benefits is currently harming same-sex couples in New Jersey in a wide range of contexts. Same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution.”
Sing it sister!
Now however, we can expect an appeal from Governor Chris Christie, who has said in the past that he opposes allowing gay couples to marry in New Jersey.
Although, the Governor DID just sign into a law a statewide ban on gay conversion therapy, so MAYBE he’ll change his tune?
We shall see!!!
