Can we all stop weight-shaming each other now? Please!

Yale University student Frances Chan was nearly kicked out of school because, according to their health center, she was severely underweight.

The 20-year-old is 5’2” and 92lbs which alarmed the caretakers at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, where Chan was getting a lump in her breast checked out (it was benign!).

That’s when the school basically demanded that she gain weight or get out because her BMI, or Body Mass Index, was too low.

So, Chan explained to them that everyone in her family is thin, and even had her parents send medical records from her family doctor!

But that wasn’t enough for these Ivy League school peeps, who apparently know everything.

They made Chan go to mandatory weigh-ins and even had her meet with mental health counselors to see if she had an eating disorder. Meanwhile, the healthy student started making some unhealthy life changes to appease the university. She explains:

“It felt really bad to be this powerless. I ate ice cream twice a day. I ate cookies. I used elevators instead of walking up stairs. But I don’t really gain any weight… It’s something we need to bring attention to. I don’t want to get kicked out of school, but no one, so far, has been willing to stand up for me.”

So, around spring break, Chan took matters into her own hands and wrote an essay about her situation for the Huffington Post, where she explained that this isn’t the first time that Yale has done this to their students.

Ridiculous, right?!

Well, after all of her efforts, the school determined that Chan isn’t a risk to herself, she’s just thin! She’s also got a new physician who admitted that the BMI scale is flawed in some cases like hers, which is something the previous docs wouldn’t cop to.

Now, Chan will get to stay in school, but will still have her health monitored once a semester.

It’s just ridiculous that she had to waste her time on this at all, especially when there are people on the campus who really do need help!
