Taylor Swift isn’t just Billboard‘s Woman Of The Year; she’s her own woman through and through!

The Blank Space singer had to deal with a surprising amount of pushback on her way to releasing the biggest album of the year.

Sure, 1989 seems like a no-brainer in retrospect, but record execs had a hard time seeing Tay-Tay’s vision of this perfect pop album.

Among other things, she was asked to use a different album title, a different cover, and even to put violins on Shake It Off to give it more country appeal!

But gurl wasn’t having it. She said:

“I remember all the sit-downs in the conference rooms… they said, ‘Are you really sure you want to do this? Are you sure you want to call the album 1989? We think it’s a weird title. Are you sure you want to put an album cover out that has less than half of your face on it? Are you positive that you want to take a genre that you cemented yourself in, and switch to one that you are a newcomer to?’ And answering all of those questions with ‘Yes, I’m sure’ really frustrated me at the time — like, ‘Guys, don’t you understand, this is what I’m dying to do?'”

Ha! Good thing gurl knows how to Shake that stuff Off!

But it isn’t just her own music and vision she defends.

When Billboard asked new BFF Lorde about Taylor fighting for her right to succeed in the music biz, she said:

“Taylor is like this force of protective energy. She looks after everyone she knows.”

No wonder she has so many friends!

Sounds like you just have to let Taylor be Taylor and make sure you’re along for the Swift ride!
