Yes! Disney is giving us some diversity!
Not only are we soon getting a Polynesian princess on the big screen with Moana, now we’re finally getting our first Latina princess!
The first image of Elena Of Avalor (above) was revealed on Thursday!
The 16-year-old princess — played by Aimee Carrero, whose voice fans might recognize from The Americans or Level Up — will be making her debut in an episode of Sofia The First next year.
Elena will be revealed to be trapped inside Sofia’s Amulet of Avalor, but when she’s freed she’ll go on her own adventures — in her own animated series on Disney Junior!
In the announcement, Disney Junior Worldwide executive VP and general manager Nancy Kanter said:
“Our creative team has delivered a universal story with themes that authentically reflect the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience. What excites us most is the chance to use distinctive animation and visual design to tell wonderful stories influenced by culture and traditions that are familiar to the worldwide population of Hispanic and Latino families and reflect the interests and aspirations of all children as told through a classic fairy tale.”
Speaking of Hispanic families, Elena will get help ruling her kingdom from her sister and grandparents, as well as some magical friends she meets along the way.
Sounds like our kind of princess!
