This is just so painfully insensitive. Shows just how backwards and unenlightened people still are.
Ohio Detective Tom McLaughlin showed some serious insensitivity while a transgender suspect was being interviewed at the end of last year.
Robin Adelmann, 34, was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting and taken by police to be questioned on December 21.
During questioning by another officer, McLaughlin apparently started playing the Aerosmith song Dude (Looks Like A Lady)! That’s awful!!
“I look at the detective [questioning me] and I’m like, ‘You know why he’s doing that, right?’ And the detective was like, ‘Hey, what can ya do?'”
Wow. That is just so terrible! That’s not even funny.
To make things worse, the detective then played Lola by The Kinks. That song is about a man meeting a transgender woman.
Thankfully, the interviewing officer stood up and asked the detective to stop. McLaughlin’s response? To shout back:
“Hey! It’s a good song!”
We bet he thought he was being soooo funny!
Well he wasn’t, and Robin didn’t think so either — she filed a complaint with the police department. She said:
“I live in a homeless shelter, but things have been going well for me. I’m really loving the fact that I decided to transition and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. But some of this is really difficult. I hear that kind of stuff on the street every single day, no matter what. So when I heard it from a professional police officer who is supposed to protect us, it was just too much.”
She has such an incredibly positive outlook! That’s so amazing.
Detective McLaughlin has been issued a verbal warning and been ordered to attend sensitivity training.
We hope it takes.
