For all the single people out there, Valentine’s Day can be absolute MISERY.

Though we won’t judge if your V-Day plans consists of a bottle of wine (or two) and a Friends marathon on Netflix, we have a few better options for you thanks to our friend and dating doctor extraordinaire, David Coleman.

Similarly to Will Smith‘s character in the movie Hitch, David is an absolute expert when it comes to love and dating. Coleman frequently visits campuses around the U.S. giving motivational speeches on how to find true love.

So, we HAD to ask Dr. Coleman — how can we not be “forever alone” on Valentine’s Day like our fave 30 Rock character, Liz Lemon?

According to our dating guru, the answer is actually quite simple!

David reveals:

“To avoid being “forever alone” on Valentine’s Day, you first have to stop believing that is even a remote possibility in your life. It means you are living under the influence of a Negative Self-Fulfilling Prophecy and that must stop today! If you believe something to be true, you may tend to live your life headed in that direction. Everyone must say, out loud, on a daily basis, “I would so date me!” and then believe it to be true. If you are not your own greatest ambassador or biggest champion, who will be?”

Wow, we just love the positive sentiment of this tip!! It’s so important to love yourself before you can love another person!

So, what if you have a special “friend”? How can you go from friendship to romance?

Coleman explains:

“I train my audiences and clients to be a “Fat Penguin” because someone needs to “Break The Ice.” If someone has been flirting with you or you with them or it has been quite mutual, one of you needs to break the ice and simply say, ‘Hey, why should we spend Valentine’s Day alone when we can spend it together, or with friends and have a remarkable time.’ I often share with my friends, fans and clients…’People seldom remember who broke the ice, they’re just happy to be standing in a puddle.'”

Ha! We love the penguin analogy!

Oh, and if all else fails? Have a party with your friends!

The doctor advises:

“With other single friends, host a S.A.D. PARTY! (SINGLE’S AWARENESS DAY!). Have great music playing, enjoy delicious food and invite all your single friends to attend. Have them each bring a food and beverage item to share to be invested in the success of the event. The main rule is that they have to have an incredibly positive attitude when they arrive and they have to bring at least one single friend with whom they have no romantic attachment. Then watch the sparks (hopefully) fly!”

We love this positive and inspiring advice!

The main point is, V-Day doesn’t have to be a disaster if you’re single — it’s up to YOU to make it a fantastic day!
