NFL Hires First Full-Time Woman Official… Sarah Thomas!

Amazing news!

The NFL has announced that they’ve hired their first full time woman official to work some of next year’s regular season’s games!

Unsurprisingly the person they picked was a no-brainer as they chose Sarah Thomas, who has been working for a long time in the college football ranks and who also was the first woman to officiate a NCAA game back in 2007!

She’s also spent a lot of time in the NFL’s developmental program for officials so you know she’s going to be ready once the opening kickoff game happens!

And it isn’t just us that’s excited! Lots of professionals associated with the football league are, as well!

Here’s what a beat writer for the Baltimore Ravens wrote on Twitter:

We can’t wait until the NFL season rolls around so we can catch Sarah in action & making history!

We can’t help but wonder, though — how does Shannon Eastin feel about this? In 2012 she was the first woman ever to officiate a regular season game for the NFL, but was not kept on full time. The game happened during the referee lockout at the Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams game that year.

For Sarah, though, she’s not coming out of nowhere: it’s been a long time coming for her, but we’re sure that now that this day is here she must feel SO good!!!

Congratulations, Sarah!!!!
