Alaska Airlines Reportedly Kicks Woman Off A Flight For Having Cancer

no title

Awful.

Alaska Airlines has a PR nightmare on their hands after one of their plane’s flight crews refused to let a woman with cancer fly… because she allegedly didn’t have a doctor’s note!

The woman’s name is Elizabeth Sedway and she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a few years ago.

But she never experienced getting kicked off a plane for having cancer before. We wish that was STILL the case, but it isn’t: reportedly, she and her family had to through that very scenario past Monday when trying to board a plane for California from Hawaii.

Elizabeth shared the whole incident on her Facebook where she wrote:

“Today, we were at gate 8 ready to depart on Alaska Airlines for San Jose. An airline employee saw me seated in the handicap section of the boarding area. She asked me if I needed anything. The first time. I said no. The second time, O said, well I might need a bit of extra time to board, sometimes I feel weak. Because I said the word weak, the Alaska Airlines employee called a doctor, she claimed was associated with the airlines. After we board the plane. An Alaska representative boarded the plane, and told us I could not fly without a note from a doctor stating that I was cleared to fly. The video is of us being removed from the plane.”

What the heck?!

Apparently saying that she felt “weak” was the reason for the whole doctor visit/doctor’s note thing!

And not only did this particular Alaska Airlines crew humiliate this woman by kicking her off the plane, but they also caused her and her family to miss a lot more.

Elizabeth wrote:

“I am scheduled for chemo, at home, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Because of this, I will miss my chemotherapy, my children will miss school, and my husband will miss important meetings.”

So much wrongness happening, it doesn’t even make sense!

Alaska Airlines has since apologized for kicking the woman and her family off the plane and has refunded their tickets as well as their hotel’s costs for the extra night they had to stay in Hawaii.

Here’s what Alaska Airlines said in a statement:

“We regret the inconvenience Ms. Sedway experienced yesterday. Her family’s tickets have been refunded and we’ll cover the cost of her family’s overnight accommodations in Lihue. Our employee had the customer’s well-being in mind when we sought the advice of trained medical professionals.”

Riiiight.

Well, at least they sort of made up for this, but after watching the video of Elizabeth being kicked off the plane, we’re not sure an apology and refunded ticket is enough!

We’re not sure what else Alaska Airlines can do for this woman and her family, but it’s clear from the video that was taken of them being thrown off the plane that this was one ugly misstep by the crew and staff who wouldn’t let this woman fly back home.
