The end of an era is upon us!
Mamma Mia! is one of Broadway’s longest running shows, but the popular musical will be shutting its fabulous doors VERY soon!
It’s been announced that the musical will have its 5,765th and final performance September 5th! So sad!
The musical is the 8th longest running Broadway show in history which makes sense considering Mamma Mia! first opened its doors 14 years ago in October 2001, and has made a whopping $600 million in New York since then.
And producer Judy Craymer is super proud of the show’s success. She said:
“It’s amazing we’ve sailed through a decade and a half, and I think it’s the right time to go. We want to have a fun and buoyant summer and go out with grace.”
The producer admitted part of the reason the decision was made to end was a cold box office winter, but she’s still pretty proud of this ah-mazing musical! She said:
“It was a tough winter for everybody and it’s become very competitive on Broadway. But I’ll take the badge of being the eighth-longest-running show…It’s an honour to be recognized as one of the most popular shows in Broadway history and we’re looking forward to celebrating our last summer at the Broadhurst Theatre.”
That’s a pretty amazing feat!!!
The show was named after a song by the popular Swedish group ABBA, and some have speculated the group will head to Broadway to join the cast of Mamma Mia! for their final show.
Wouldn’t that be amazing?!
We’ll definitely miss having Mamma Mia! around, but it seems like everyone associated with this show is ready to have an incredible summer to give her a proper send-off!!!
