A Young Girl Born Without Feet Gets A Very Special Friend — A Puppy Who’s Just Like Her!

This is such a sweet story!

A three-year-old girl who was born without fingers or feet received a very special surprise Tuesday afternoon — a puppy who’s just like her!

Sapphyre Johnson has been a patient at the Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina since she was only three months old due to her birth defect.

The little girl’s father saw the paw-less puppy as a great opportunity and companion for his daughter.

Matthew Johnson said:

“A lot of kids don’t see other children or animals that have issues like they have. This was a really nice thing and a really good thing for Sapphyre.”

This whole situation happened when local breeder Karen Riddle decided to contact the hospital to ask if anyone would want a white German Shepard puppy who was born with only three paws.

Once hospital employee Elaine Hardin got the message, she reportedly went out to find this special pup the perfect owner.

Elaine told GreenvilleOnline when she showed Sapphyre a picture of the puppy, she responded:

“The first time I showed her a picture of the dog, she looked at it for a moment, and she said, ‘That’s my puppy. He’s just like me.’ He’s a special dog and he’s going to a special child.”

The Shriners child life specialist explained that the puppy, appropriately named Lt. Dan, not only would be a great companion, but he could help the three-year-old educate people about her disability.

Elaine said:

“In the future, I could see Sapphyre at her first show-and-tell in school and she could bring in her dog and explain about her dog and herself. Everybody loves dogs and they’ll want to know about her dog that’s special like her.”

What a special moment!

And to think, the breeder was given advice to put the puppy down. We’re so glad she decided against that!
