As people are starting to become more health conscious, certain food chemicals are starting to get called out for being too unhealthy. Aspartame has fallen victim to a particularly bad reputation lately.
This food chemical is used in most diet sodas as a no-calorie sweetener, and many customers demanded soda companies to get rid of aspartame in their diet beverages, so PepsiCo listened to them!
The company confirmed this week that they will debut Diet Pepsi free of the sweetener in the U.S. later this year! Senior vice president Seth Kaufman had this to say:
“Diet cola drinkers in the U.S. told us they wanted aspartame-free Diet Pepsi and we’re delivering. We recognize that consumer demand is evolving and we’re confident that cola-lovers will enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of this new product.”
So what will take the place of the shunned sweetener? Instead of aspartame, diet sodas from PepsiCo will be sweetened with a blend of sucralose and acesulfame potassium — both artificial sweeteners.
This ingredient change will be implemented in Diet Pepsi, Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi, and Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi. And you can expect to see the new drinks hit shelves in August!
We think it’s great that Pepsi is accommodating the demands of their customers, but hopefully, they have a plan C for if these replacement chemicals are deemed just as unhealthy as aspartame!
