The NFL sure does love its troops! But apparently that “love” comes at a pretty steep price!
Anyone who has ever watched a football game knows it’s NOT uncommon for teams to honor members of the armed forces during breaks in the action.
But if you think these patriotic displays are free, then you’re DEAD wrong!! In fact, teams CHARGE the U.S. Defense Department TONS of money for these special on-field tributes!
How much are we talking here? Well, over the past four years the U.S. Defense Department has paid 14 teams a grand total of $5.4 million!!
Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Waiters was one of the first to speak out after it was revealed the New Jersey National Guard paid $377,000 to the Jets!
Strangely enough, the National Guard is actually DEFENDING these prices, saying displays like this are great for recruiting! Spokesperson Patrick Daugherty said:
“Promoting and increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation of military service in the New Jersey Army National Guard increases the propensity for service in our ranks and garners public support for our hometown team.”
Publicity is always a great thing, but we’re guessing the U.S. Defense Department has more important things to spend its money on!
And at the end of the day, is this really an opportunity that the NFL should be cashing in on???
What are your thoughts, readers? Is this another greedy act from the NFL?? Sound off in the comments below!
