Thankfully Sandra Lee is a stickler for routine mammograms, otherwise her doctors could’ve detected the breast cancer a little too late.
The celebrity chef opened up on Tuesday morning to Good Morning America and revealed she was shocked after hearing the cancer news:
“Life can turn on a dime.”
About two months after being diagnosed with cancer in her right breast, Sandra shared she will be undergoing a double mastectomy to avoid going through radiation.
Her reasoning for it:
“I never want to go through this again.”
After the 48-year-old had a biopsy to confirm the DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ, a noninvasive cancer contained within milk ducts that can get worse if left untreated) diagnosis, she went through testing to search for genes that increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
Once she was negative, Sandra consulted a number of doctors to help her make her decision in terms of treatment.
When this is all over and done with, the chef plans on focusing on health and spreading the word. She said:
“I plan to spread the word about early detection.”
Remember ladies, there’s no need to wait until 50 to get a mammogram!
By going sooner, there’s always a possibility of being able to catch any signs of cancer and getting rid of it before it gets worse!
