When the good news came out that The Simpsons had been renewed for another two years, there was a dark lining to the silver cloud.

Rumor had it that one of the cast had not yet signed on for more episodes.

Now it seems that Harry Shearer was that cast member, and his loss will be devastating!

Harry tweeted the news in a strange but dour series of messages that included words from the lawyer of Simpsons creator James L. Brooks.

But the bigger point was that he was leaving the show for good! He wrote:

This loss will be devastating for fans.

On the show since the beginning, Shearer performed the voices of dozens of characters, including Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Dr. Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Principal Skinner, Otto Mann, Rainier Wolfcastle, God, Judge Snyder, Kang, and Scratchy.

No word yet on whether Fox will write off the characters or recast them.

Reports on why the star — who you might also know from his onscreen performances in This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind — refused to sign the contract extension are sketchy.

The International Business Times reported it was over a cut of merchandising.

But he said himself it was over “freedom to do other work.” So until we hear more, we’ll leave it at that.

So sad.
