We can understand why!
Empire actress, Taraji P. Henson, recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for their Roundtable session they do and dished quite a bit on her hit show as well as what it’s like playing such a popular character like Cookie.
After reading the pilot script for the hit hip-hop Fox show, Henson said that the character she now plays, Cookie, “scared the hell out of [her]” and was quite upset her agent even sent her the script to begin with.
But after thinking it over and and realizing how great a chance it could be to play a character like this, Henson calmed down and decided the face the challenge head on! She said of taking the role on:
“I was petrified. But for me, that fear means it’s a challenge that I had to take on. Because if it doesn’t shake me up, then why am I doing it?…Empire has forced people to have conversations that they were afraid to have. And that is what art is supposed to do. I just didn’t know it was going to shake things up this much!”
After she settled into the role, in which she says is influenced more from her dad than her mom, Henson says she’s really not a fan of her character. Not necessarily because of the character herself but more for what playing Cookie has done to her life. She says,
“I hate that bitch Cookie. She has stolen my identity. I’m getting called Cookie everywhere. My friends don’t want to talk to me unless it’s about Cookie.”
Henson who has been nominated for several awards across her career including an Emmy nomination for the Lifetime movie Taken from Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story! But she’s not done yet! She’s so interested in exploring her craft that she wants to play everything that she hasn’t played yet, whether it be a superhero, a bond girl, or even a man!
We’d lobby to see her play ANY of those roles! But only if she keeps playing Cookie! Season 2 of Empire is set to air September 23, 2015, so make sure you’re around or set your DVR, because we know Cookie’s going to bring it!
