It takes a brave person to even talk about this.
Lauren Wasser, the model who had her right leg amputated below the knee after suffering from toxic shock syndrome, admits that she was suicidal following her ordeal.
Even years after the initial hospitalization, the 27-year-old struggled to cope with her new reality:
“I was in a really dark place and I didn’t think that I could go on. Honestly, I just accepted that this is my life maybe a month or two ago.”
As a model used to being praised for her looks, Lauren also admits the loss of her leg was a terrible blow:
“I was so ashamed of my leg. I was so embarrassed and I didn’t know how people were going to react because the old Lauren didn’t have these flaws.”
Despite struggling with her self-worth, the model found strength in her 14-year-old brother, and in wanting to show him that she could rise above:
“I wanted to show him that I could be badass and recover and stand strong. He really was my motivation to stay alive.”
Now she is focused on making tampon companies more accountable for TSS and in helping other amputees deal with their situation:
“I want to give hope to other little kids with amputations and for them to know they are still beautiful. I can turn this into something positive that people can feed off of and grow from and be inspired from. That’s my whole life goal now.”
We have no doubt she’ll be inspiring people for the rest of her life.
We’re rooting for you, Lauren!
