Darren Criss Apologizes For The ‘Severity’ Of His Caitlyn Jenner Remark During A Recent Hedwig Performance!

darren criss apologizes to caitlyn jenner

UPDATE 2:26 PM EST: To add some clarity to the matter, let’s talk about context. The context of the line during the show is of Hedwig describing her perfume line she has — that the perfume is for everyone. The ‘whatever you are’ piece, she actually points to someone in the audience. That is where the confusion is and it is hard to decipher based off that tweet.

On Friday, Darren Criss formally apologized to Caitlyn Jenner on Facebook after he joked about the reality star’s transition during a performance this week of Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

One attendee noted on Twitter:

“Tonight, Darren Criss, as HEDWIG said, ‘man, woman, moman, wan, Bruce Jenner, whatever you are’ and it was very distasteful.”

Though his comments were made while playing the character Hedwig — the 28-year-old’s since been accused of being transphobic.

This backlash has since inspired the Glee actor to comment on the remark.

He shared:

“I want to sincerely apologize to Caitlyn Jenner, all transgender people, and anyone who was offended for my words on stage during Tuesday evening’s performance. In no way do the remarks reflect my personal belief system or my support for transgender people. However, I do realize the severity of the comment and the weight that words can carry and for that, I take full responsibility.

I commend Caitlyn on her strength and for spreading acceptance around the globe. I have been and remain a proud and unwavering ally of the LGBTQIA community, and will continue to walk alongside my friends on the road to full equality and acceptance.”

Aww! He seems sincere.

This scandal is certainly shocking since Criss has been such an avid supporter of LGBT community since rising to fame by playing an openly gay character on Ryan Murphy‘s hit show.
