The word of the day is SAD.
That’s because one of Sesame Street‘s most longtime residents Maria is retiring after an amazing 44 years!
Maria — played by actress Sonia Manzano — joined the show way back in 1971, a year we’re assured really existed, and not just on TV!
Sonia announced her retirement during an address at the American Library Association Annual Conference on Tuesday to both shock and grief from fans.
During her time on the Street, the Latina role model won 15 Emmys for her writing and was nominated twice for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series for her time onscreen.
The next generation to watch Sesame Street will be a little worse off for not having her around. See some of her best moments through the years (below)!
