When Madonna released her song Express Yourself all those years ago, we’re not sure this is what she had in mind!
Jonathan Groff recently opened up to FourTwoNine about his missed connection with the superstar singer back April, when she was not invited backstage after seeing a production of Hamilton at the Public Theater in New York City.
For those of you wondering why on Earth author-slash-composer Lin-Manuel Miranda denied the pop princess’ request to meet the cast of the hip-hop musical, it might be because she wasn’t watching the show as much as she was texting through it.
But the Broadway babe wasn’t really broken up about not being able to talk to the music icon. In fact, Jonathan hopes the snub taught her a lesson about theater etiquette, saying:
“That bitch was on her phone. You couldn’t miss it from the stage. It was a black void of the audience in front of us and her face there perfectly lit by the light of her iPhone through three-quarters of the show.”
But the shade didn’t stop there!
He also went on to explain how other famous fans were on much better behavior. Like, say, Michelle Obama:
“What was funny about it was that she was there that Saturday night, but at that Saturday matinee Michelle Obama was there. We were collecting for Broadway Cares after the show, and Mrs. Obama stayed in the audience while the Broadway Cares speech happened, and Lin called her out and the audience applauded for her. Then she came backstage and hugged every crew member├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥the wig girl, all the costume people, every cast member. She said to us├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥and this is a direct quote├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥’This is the greatest piece of art I’ve ever seen.’ It’s crazy.”
The next time Madonna decides to hit the theater, she should probably leave her phone at home. That way she might actually get to go backstage!
Maybe then she and Jonathan can bury the hatchet.
