The boy was part of a group of about 20 people when he and his mom had wandered off about 100 to 200 yards away from the group’s main cap site. The little boy was looking for and chasing grasshoppers when his mom “lost sight” of him around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The mother didn’t contact authorities immediately because they felt they would find Jerold fairly easily. After four hours, and an exhaustive search, they finally called the police.

By the time Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received the call at 5:30 p.m., they said:

“We did as much as we could with both operations on the ground and in the air, but we were short on daylight.”

A group of around 400 people came together to search for five days for the missing boy and military helicopters with night vision as well as ground crews with dogs and ATVs were used.

Unfortunately on Monday, when they found Jerold’s body, it was too late.

The Sheriff’s Office, said the child’s parents were completely devastated saying:

“I don’t think the mother has left the command post. She had been there the whole time.”

Adding that the father was “very involved” in the search.

No further details have been released in regards to the cause of death, but there doesn’t seem to be any signs of foul play or abduction.

We can’t imagine how heartbreaking this must be. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic event.
