Vanessa Williams is finally returning to the Miss America stage!
The Ugly Betty star famously became the first African American to be crowned Miss America back in 1984 — but was sadly relieved of her title after nude photos of her were sold to Penthouse magazine without her consent!
Now, the 52-year-old will be reunited with the pageant in a different role, she is set to serve as head judge for this year’s competition!
Over the years, Williams has boasted achievements in entertainment and philanthropy — she has earned 11 Grammy nominations, has appeared in hit TV shows, and won the Human Rights Campaign‘s Ally for Equality Award for her humanitarian work!
Sam Haskell, executive chairman & CEO of the Miss America Organization, had this to say about Williams returning to the pageant:
“Vanessa Williams made history by becoming the first African American to win the competition when she was crowned Miss America 1984, and she went on to conquer the worlds of music, Broadway, television, and film. It is a great honor to welcome her back to the competition as our head judge.”
The former contestant will join fellow judges Zendaya, Brett Eldredge, Taya Kyle, Danica McKellar, Kevin O’Leary, and Amy Purdy.
Find out if Williams will be a tough judge when the 2016 Miss America Competition airs live on Sunday, September 13 at 9 PM ET on ABC!
