This is so sad.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Joseph Cameron Ponder was shot around 10:20pm last night after a driver fled from a traffic stop on Interstate 24.

The suspect, 25-year-old Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks, was briefly stopped after being pulled over by Ponder, but sped off shortly after as the rookie trooper pursued him for approximately 9 miles.

It was at this point that the suspect’s car came to a halt and Ponder crashed into the back of Johnson-Shanks’ vehicle. Shanks then got out and started shooting at the State Trooper hitting the hood of the car as well as the young officer multiple times.

Ponder was immediately taken to a hospital in Princeton, Kentucky, but sadly died from the wounds at about 11:41 p.m.

A manhunt for Johnson-Shanks has started as the suspect fled the scene of the crime on foot and is still at large. Authorities describe him as a 25-year-old 5’5″ black man who weighs approximately 140 pounds.

Police have said Johnson-Shanks should be considered armed and very dangerous and are urging people in the area to keep their houses locked up. To help in the efforts of finding the man at large, police have shut down I-24 between 45 and 56 mile markers.

Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragic event, and we hope that justice finds the man responsible for this heinous act.
