A simple “sorry” would have been SO much better than this!
Irving McArthur High School has been under fire all morning after it was reported that the Texas school had a 14-year-old student named Ahmed Mohamed arrested for bringing what some teachers believed “looked like a bomb” to class.
It turns out he actually had a homemade clock (see pic below) he had put together on his own and brought it to class to show his teachers!
Now many are accusing the school of racial profiling due to the fact that the teen is Muslim!
Well, Principal Dan Cummings sent a letter home to parents explaining that they were simply looking out for all of their children’s safety. However, things take an unfortunate turn in the last paragraph, which reads:
“I recommend using this opportunity to talk with your child about the Student Code of Conduct and specifically not bringing items to school that are prohibited. Also, this is a good time to remind your child how important it is to immediately report any suspicious items and/or suspicious behavior they observe to any school employee so we can address it right away. We will always take necessary precautions to protect our students.”
So basically this whole thing could have been avoided if Ahmed didn’t bring a prohibited item to school.
Did we mention the part where he brought in a clock he built on his own???
Yeah, a circuit board, some wires, and a digital readout — and it plugs into the wall. Doesn’t exactly look like a bomb.
Many have spoken out saying Ahmed should be applauded and not arrested for his amazing ambition, and he even gained a few high profile fan in Mark Zuckerberg and Hillary Clinton! They both reached out, saying:
It’s great to see so many have spoken out in support of Ahmed who CLEARLY did absolutely nothing wrong yet somehow ended up in cuffs!
And hopefully Dan Cummings and Irving McArthur High School will learn to change their tune and learn to encourage bright young students like Ahmed to never stop building!
