UPDATE 1:01 PM EST: Empire received HUGE ratings as it had 16 million total viewers tuning in Wednesday night for its Season 2 premiere! The hip-hop drama nabbed a 6.5 rating/20 share in the important 18-49 demographic.

Even though it didn’t live up to season one’s finale that had 16.7 million people watching, it’s still EXTREMELY high for a debut. In comparison, season one’s premiere only pulled in 9.9 million viewers! Keep it up, Cookie and Lucious!

It’s back!

Everyone’s favorite hip-hop drama returned last night and it was a DOOZY!

If you remember from the end of last season of Empire, Lucious (Terrence Howard) is in jail and he left Empire Records in the hands of his son Jamal.

The episode started with a three month time jump which lead to a whole lot of drama!

Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) tried to scheme her way with the help of Mimi Whiteman (Marisa Tomei) to stage a hostile takeover! Lucious of course stopped this by going behind Cookie’s back — he’s a sneaky SOB even from jail!

But the most shocking part of the episode came when [SPOILER ALERT] Frank Gathers (Chris Rock) showed up and — after convincing Cookie’s cousin to sell her out — sent Cookie a decapitated head in the mail! It might have been Cookie’s cousin too, but we’re not positive!

Cookie then chatted it up with Lucious a bit, and her ex ended up handling Franks business in ANOTHER shocking moment!

Lucious was all ready to make nice with Frank and promise to sign his daughter to a record deal but Mr. Gathers just wanted to get his murder on.

Fortunately for the Empire founder, he turned all of Frank’s men against him. The best part? Right before Frank was killed, Lucious told him:

“I’m gonna sign your baby girl and I’m gonna slip her my bone.”

That’s cold, Lucious!

Sure there was some more family and relationship drama and some other great moments — we love Krispy Kreme too, Cookie — but hey, that’s show business right?!

What did you think of last night’s premiere? Did it live up to the hype??
