This is so incredible!

Jaxon Emmett Buell — who was born to Brandon and Brittany Buell — celebrated his first birthday about a month ago and it was a MIRACLE!

That’s because Jaxon was born with a brain malformation that meant he probably wasn’t going to survive very long.

Jaxon has Anencephaly which is a birth defect that causes children to develop without parts of the brain and skull and, as a result, often die shortly after they’re born.

The proud parents of “Jax Strong” — as he’s been nicknamed on social media by fans — clearly remember the moment they learned of the condition. Brandon recalled:

“After our second ultrasound at 17 weeks, when we found out he was a boy, we knew something was up when the ultrasound technician went towards his head and went very quiet.”

Brandon continued by saying:

“Brittany got the call the next day from the doctors saying there was a concern with the MRI results. She was in tears and told me there was an issue with the baby. Of course, I lost it at work so they sent me home and the rest of the day was a blur truly.”

After meeting with several different doctors, the couple were given the option to abort at 23 weeks, something they decided against. They explained:

“We went home that night thinking if you are telling us to abort, we would never know what Jaxon could have been, if he could have survived. ‘Who are we to decide? We were given a child, we are given a chance and we have to be his voice.”

Jaxon of course survived the pregnancy and was born by caesarian section on August 27, 2014 and weighed four pounds!

Despite the miracle, it was still a rough road. Brandon said:

“It was very emotional. I remember holding him on day two and listening to the doctors say my son would probably never walk, never talk, never know when he’s hungry, or never hear or see. They really did not expect him to make it.”

After a couple months of scares which included several seizures and constant screaming, as well as feeding tube problems, the new parents took their son to the emergency room where they ultimately got a bit of hope!

They received a more precise diagnosis of Microhydranencephaly and were given new medicine that has since helped Jaxon’s condition and made him a lot happier.

Of course Brandon and Brittany aren’t blind to reality and know that something could happen at any moment. Brittany said of that fear:

“It is always in the back of my mind. I’m very aware that today maybe his last day. I’m aware tomorrow he may not be here.”

Though the Buell family has had a rough year or so, Brandon has some AH-Mazing co-workers who set up a GoFundMe page when Jaxon was born in order to help the single income family out with their expensive medication and extra needs for their son!

We’re so THRILLED Jaxon continues to defy the odds and we can’t wait to see what his future holds!
