At the time, a reporter saw that the New England Patriots quarterback had a hat with the Republican’s name on it, and proceeded to ask if the he thinks Donald has a shot at winning.
Tom responded by saying:
“I hope so. It would be great. There’d be a putting green on the White House lawn, I’m sure of that!”
And just like that, all of the 38-year-old’s internet haters exclaimed that the sports star had endorsed the controversial candidate.
They felt that should be enough to condemn him, considering Deflategate hadn’t worked out the way they hoped.
But on Monday, the famous footballer broke his silence about the remark on WEEI‘s Dennis & Callahan Show, saying the whole thing was blown way out of proportion:
“It’s just a different world than when I started in professional football. Even an off-handed comment like that, like you said, that people may run with. And I understand why people do run with it because you get the clicks and that type of stuff. It’s just people doing their job. A comment like that, I try to have fun with certain things, you know, but some things a lot of times get taken out of context.”
You know what? That actually makes a lot of sense! When he mentioned a putting green on the White House lawn, that did seem like a joke!
The athlete explained that he has a positive personal relationship with the businessman, but also noticed that his remarks seem to be gathering a lot of attention within the media:
“He’s been a fun guy that I’ve had a lot of time around. The fact that he’s running has obviously led to a lot of stories and debates and ratings were huge for all those Republican debates and so forth. One way or another, it’s so far away from when the election will be.”
But when that election finally rolls around, who will Tom back on his ballot?
“Whatever I vote is going to be my own personal choice based on how I feel. I don’t even know what the issues are. I haven’t paid attention to politics in a long time. It’s actually not something that I really even enjoy. It’s way off my radar.”
We can’t really blame him for not following the all the debate drama, considering his team is on quite a roll right now he’s pretty focused on maintaining that undefeated status!
