Chris Harper Mercer, the attacker in the shooting in Roseburg, Oregon that left many dead and many more injured, apparently died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound after police responded to the scene.

Stephanie Salas, the mother of one of the victims who survived, Rand McGown, told reporters of the scene:

“Rand’s head was down, but [Harper] did say, ‘You come here. I want you to live.’ He wanted the person he chose to give the police something.’ I don’t know what it was. It was information. Then he killed himself in the classroom. All the students were like, ‘Is he dead? Is he gone?’ Then they stood up and [Rand] said he saw the killer with a big hole in his head.”

Ugh. It is so awful to think so many people suffered horribly in this tragedy.

Salas’ son Rand, who was shot in the hand, is expected to recover, but our thoughts continue to be with so many in Oregon and around the world who lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy.
