Well this is super embarrassing for FOX News!
A man named Wayne Simmons, calling himself a “terrorism expert” and “former CIA operative,” has appeared consistently on the national news network for the past 13 years as an analyst on segments surrounding war, foreign relations, intelligence, and national defense.
Simmons, who says he has 27 years of expertise behind him as an “outside paramilitary special operations officer,” has discussed on the cable giant hundreds of different topics, among them what he views as President Barack Obama‘s soft stance on anti-terrorism activities, and how waterboarding apparently isn’t torture.
And because Simmons has nearly three decades of Central Intelligence Agency experience under his belt, his views are pretty well-respected in the political realm, especially by right-wing politicians and pundits.
Well… that all changed on Thursday afternoon, when Simmons was indicted by a federal grand jury and then arrested by police for allegedly lying about his professional background and work with the CIA.
Simmons is in DEEP doo-doo now, facing charges of falsely claiming he worked for the CIA from 1973 to 2000, as well as using that false claim to become a defense contractor with special government security clearances that oversaw senior military personnel overseas.
The CIA released a statement about the arrest on Friday morning:
“[We are] working closely with the Justice Department on this matter and we refer you to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia for comment on the charges.”
And, the US Attorney’s Office then followed up with their own:
“The indictment also alleges that Simmons defrauded an individual victim out of approximately $125,000 in connection with a bogus real estate investment.”
Because of course… why just lie about being a CIA operative when you can also run a real estate scam and take $125,000 from some poor sucker?!
Simmons’ on-air greatest hits contain a doozy of a comment, too; back in January on a segment for FOX, he revealed maybe the most ridiculous on-air take of his (now-disgraced) career as a terrorism expert:
“We’ve got at least 19 paramilitary Muslim training facilities in the United States. Are you kidding me? What are they gonna do, go hunt deer during deer season? No!”
At the time, that was met with skepticism from all over the political realm, and it probably should have been a sign at the time that Simmons was maybe a bit in over his head. And yet here we are!
Nevertheless, he’s now facing up to 35 years in prison on various charges relating to wire fraud, major fraud against the United States government, and making false statements.
His only hope is that his trial is fair and balanced!
