This is so tragic.

A 9-year-old boy has died after collapsing during a Monday night football practice.

According to reports, Ohio elementary schooler Wyatt Barber was pronounced dead after collapsing during a light non-contact practice for the Big Bend Youth Football team.

Police said that the young athlete fell unconscious when the team took a break from running sprints. Sheriff Keith Wood said in a statement:

“During the process of stopping and taking a break, the young man collapsed. They started doing CPR on him immediately and contacted 911. When we got there, they were working on Wyatt and trying to get him revived, diligently trying. The coaches were working with the young man, and it just happened so, such a quick time frame of loss of him.”

Barber was a third grader at Eastern Elementary School, where grief counselors were brought to help students who were close to Barber.

Eastern Local School Superintendent Scott Gheen said:

“It is a somber mood. Kids are going to go through a process of healing, go through a process of grieving. So, we just do our best to make sure that we can give them whatever they need.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family, organized by a self-proclaimed “Football Mom” Michelle Sisson, who wrote:

“Wyatt was small but mighty and always smiling! He was our smallest Eagle on the sidelines on a Friday Night with our Varsity Eagles! Our #56 will forever be missed! Fly High Little buddy, WE LOVE YOU.”

Sadly, this tragedy is the latest in a string of young football players who have died around the country recently; since September, six have died after games and a seventh died weeks after collapsing during practice.

Our hearts go out to Wyatt’s friends and family during this devastating time.
