ISIS has released a new propaganda video that references New York City.
The clip began circulating the internet on Wednesday, showing footage of what appears to be a suicide bomber constructing an explosive for a belt.
Shots of Times Square are spliced in-between those of a faceless individual building a suicide belt. The footage shows taxis, crowds, and notable NYC storefronts.
The video did NOT show a bomber or radicalist in the city itself. But the clip did include video of French President Fran├â┬ºois Hollande speaking after last week’s tragic Paris attacks.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Stephen Davis acknowledges that this appears to be a threat towards the Big Apple, saying in a statement:
“While some of the video footage is not new, the video reaffirms the message that New York City remains a top terrorist target.”
He made it clear that the police are treating the matter incredibly seriously, even though there is no word of any immediate threat, continuing:
“While there is no current or specific threat to the City at this time, we will remain at a heightened state of vigilance and will continue to work with the FBI, the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the entire intelligence community to keep the City of New York safe. In addition, we are continuing to deploy additional Critical Response Command (CRC) teams throughout the City, out of an abundance of caution.”
The FBI echoed that statement, explaining that while they remain on high alert, “there is no specific articulable threat to the city at this time.”
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio also issued a statement, urging citizens not to panic:
“Stoking fear is the goal of terrorist organizations, but New York City will not be intimidated. The NYPD is the most capable police force in the country, with a robust counterterrorism operation that was just strengthened with an investment of 500 additional officers.”
He emphasized that authorities are working hard to keep the city safe, adding:
“While Times Square and Herald Square appear in the video, the NYPD in conjunction with all of our partners are taking all necessary security precautions in these areas and areas across the City. New Yorkers won’t live in fear and people should continue to go to work, live their lives, and enjoy the greatest city in the world”
We hope everyone in New York and around the world stays safe. Our hearts are with all the victims of the recent terror attacks.
