Two thieves stole a vehicle in Norfolk, Virginia on Wednesday morning, but had to make a pit stop after they realized a young boy was in the backseat!
The boy’s mother left the car for about 20 minutes, but came back to find her car AND 8-year-old son were missing! Norfolk police spokeswoman Melinda Wray told People:
“The mom ran into work to take care of a few things and left the car running with the music on. Apparently, this was something she did regularly and had never had any problems.”
We don’t think leaving your child in a running car should be something a mother “regularly” does!
But thankfully, the boy was safe and sound. Shortly after, police officers found him “sitting in class as if nothing had happened.”
The boy told police two men he didn’t know got into the car with him and said they were supposed to drive him to school. Wray continued:
“They said his mom had told them to drive him to school. It was slightly odd to him. He was nervous because he had never seen these men before.”
But the thieves drove him directly to Ghent Elementary School and dropped him off! Wray explained:
“The child, after he learned the true details of what happened, he was obviously shaken. But the men were not trying to abduct him. They were just trying to steal the vehicle.”
The vehicle was found later on Wednesday, parked three miles from the school. Thanks to the boy’s description, authorities have a few leads and plan to charge someone by next week.
However, the boy’s mom may also be facing charges for leaving her child alone! Wray added:
“Obviously, child neglect is something that investigators are looking into.”
Wow! Hopefully, this incident didn’t traumatize the boy — and the mom learns from her neglectful mistake.
