Three people are now confirmed dead and nine were injured after the five-hour-long standoff and shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado Friday afternoon and evening.
The Colorado Springs Police Department confirmed that among the dead was a member of law enforcement: Garrett Swasey, a 44-year-old officer and six-year veteran of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs police department. He leaves behind a wife, Rachel, and two sons.
Meanwhile, the suspect has been identified as a man in his late 50s, Robert Lewis Dear.
Dear was taken into custody at about 5:00 p.m. local time after shooting around the building for nearly six hours before police were able to apprehend him.
According to Lieutenant Catherine Buckley of the Colorado Springs Police Department, authorities:
“were able to shout to the suspect and make communication with him, and at that point they were able to get him to surrender.”
The entire situation is so sad and terrifying — our thoughts continue to go out to all the families and loved ones of those lost, injured, or otherwise affected by this awful incident.
