Miss Teen USA Contestant Almost Committed Suicide After Horrific Bullying Over Her Infamously Bad Pageant Answer

This is simply awful.

As you’re probably aware, back in 2007 a Miss Teen USA contestant went viral after her awkward answer to the question round left us all scratching our heads.

But while we may have been entertained by Caite Upton‘s garbled response to why most Americans couldn’t find the U.S. on a map — she said she believed “U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don’t have maps” — she didn’t find the video very funny.

In fact, the then-18-year-old actually considered suicide in an effort to escape the constant bullying she received — and not just online!

In an interview with New York Magazine, the representative for South Carolina revealed the worst of it:

“One group of girls took me to this party at the University of South Carolina, and I walk in, and the entire USC baseball team surrounded me and bashed me with the harshest, meanest comments I had ever heard. And somebody once put a letter in my parents’ mailbox about how my body was going to be eaten alive by ants and burned in a freak fire. And then it said, in all caps, GO DIE CAITE UPTON, GO DIE FOR YOUR STUPIDITY.”

How awful! This treatment led her into a very dark time. She admitted:

“I definitely went through a period where I was very, very depressed. But I never let anybody see that stuff, except for people I could trust. I had some very dark moments where I thought about committing suicide. The fact that I have such an amazing family and friends, it really, really helped.

This is the first time I’ve actually been able to talk about it. It was awful, and it was every single day for a good two years. I’ve only spoken to my fianc├â┬⌐ about how I felt in those moments truthfully, and my best friend. And, recently, my mom. But, like, my dad doesn’t even know yet.”

We’re glad she’s past it — and comfortable enough to talk about it now!

Luckily for Caite, she was able to parlay her viral fame into a pretty successful career as a model — she even made it to the finals on The Amazing Race Season 16!

Out of respect for Caite, we’re not going to post the infamous video — but let’s be honest, you’ve totally seen it already.

P.S. Here’s what Caite, now a Realtor, looks like now:

We think it’s safe to say she was the real winner in the end.

You’ve got our love, Caite!
