UPDATE 3:13 P.M. EST: It has now been confirmed that Tashfeen used an alias to post a Facebook status praising an ISIS leader just as the shooting took place. AP also reports that Aamaq, a news agency with ties to ISIS, has said that Tashfeen and Syed were supporters of the terrorist organization, but did not take responsibility for the attacks.
This story just continues to get more terrifying.
As you’ve probably heard, one of the worst mass shootings in American history took place on Wednesday when a husband and wife shot and killed 14 people while injuring another 21 at a holiday party in San Bernardino, California.
While we know that Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, were killed in a police standoff a few hours after the initial shooting — and that they left behind a 6-month-old daughter — more details are starting to emerge about their motives.
According to an ABC News report, Tashfeen allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS just hours before the fatal attack, clearly indicating that this was much more than simple workplace violence.
While the FBI has yet to verify that the couple were aided by the terrorist organization in any way, we do know that Tashfeen, born in Pakistan and raised in Saudi Arabia, came to America in 2014 as Syed’s fianc├â┬⌐e and the two were married that August.
In addition to the supposed ISIS ties, the fact that the pair had 4,600 rounds of ammo and 12 pipe bombs in their possession does nothing to ease fears.
Our thoughts continue to be with everyone affected by the killings — and with the innocent child left behind.
