Most Independence Day fans were understandably upset that Will Smith‘s iconic character won’t be appearing in the upcoming sequel Independence Day: Resurgence.

But no one is more upset that Steven Hiller was killed off more than the actor himself!

While some fans held onto hope that the 47-year-old would make a surprise cameo in the sci-fi sequel, the film’s website revealed that Col. Hiller died between the events of the first and second films!

This shocking death was a surprise to many, including Smith — who “had talked” to director Roland Emmerich about working together on a sequel. He told Yahoo! Movies:

“I was working on Suicide Squad during that time… The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.”

According to a fake newspaper headline on the website, Smith’s character died in 2007 from “an unknown malfunction” while test piloting an alien hybrid fighter.

Even though Col. Hiller won’t be making an appearance in Resurgence, his family will be defending planet earth!

Hiller’s son Dylan Dubrow-Hiller (Jessie Usher) and wife Jasmine (Vivica A. Fox) will probably be itching to discover if the “unknown malfunctions” that led to Steven’s death was a cover up for something more!

Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, and Bill Pullman are also reprising their roles from the original 1996 film — mixing in with new cast members Liam Hemsworth, Joey King, and Maika Monroe!
