UPDATE 3:15 PM EST: Nick Wiltgen’s death has been ruled a suicide by the Filton County Medical Examiner’s office. The coroner’s report reads:
“Wiltgen died from major head and brain injury resulting from an intentional act of driving a vehicle into/through the concrete wall of a parking deck…the manner of death has been classified as suicide.”
A meteorologist was killed after crashing his car through a parking garage wall in Atlanta on Sunday.
According to reports, Nicholas Wiltgen was pronounced dead after plowing through a wall at Midtown Altanta’s Colony Square Mall and crashing into an adjacent hotel.
Police said The Weather Channel employee’s Volkswagen Eos 3.2 traveled approximately 20 feet into the adjacent W Atlanta-Midtown, where it injured a hotel worker in a storage area — who was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The 39-year-old was a senior digital meteorologist who had been with the company for over 15 years.
President of product and technology at The Weather Channel Cameron Clayton released the following statement:
“We have lost a treasured member of The Weather Channel family. Nick Wiltgen was at Weather for more than 15 years as a senior digital meteorologist and integral member of our content team. Millions read his work every week and were better for it. He was a dedicated, passionate member of our family and we will miss him deeply. Our heartfelt sympathy is with his family and friends.”
Officials haven’t yet said what caused the crash.
