This was a close call.
The NBA‘s Sacramento Kings were planning on a “Year Of The Monkey” promotion to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Monday night, and it included black t-shirts with a monkey image on them.
Nothing wrong with that — but Monday was also February 1, AKA the first day of Black History Month, a very important and visible month in the NBA.
When the Kings’ star forward DeMarcus Cousins got to the arena and saw the shirt last night, he immediately spoke up!
Former player and current Kings broadcaster Marques Johnson recounted what happened next on Facebook (below):
Very quickly, the Kings folks realized that maybe a monkey t-shirt on the first day of Black History Month wasn’t so wise… and they pulled the shirts (below)!!!
Were these shirts insensitive?
What do YOU think??
