An Italian actor was declared clinically dead on Thursday after accidentally strangling himself during a play in Pisa.
According to reports, Raphael Schumacher had been in a coma since Saturday, when a hanging scene went tragically wrong in the experimental production Mirages.
The 27-year-old was taken to a local hospital after a medical student watching the show noticed the actor was trembling during the scene. The student stepped in and removed his mask from his face and loosened the noose around his neck.
Gabriele De Luca, the show’s art director, told reporters that Schumacher changed the script to replace fake gunshots with a noose. She said:
“We are shocked. No one, not even us, understands how this happened.”
The production involved observers walking around scenes throughout different areas of the theater — including the courtyard, where the hanging scene was performed.
Doctors reportedly declared Schumacher clinically dead on Thursday, since he was not responding to treatment.
Police are investigating the incident to make sure the right safety precautions were met, and are currently under the assumption that it was a tragic accident on stage.
Our hearts go out to Schumacher’s loved ones at this devastating time.
