This is unfortunate all around.

The former governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, has been accused of assault by an unnamed 25-year-old woman after an alleged altercation between the two on Saturday.

The 56-year-old former politician, who has steadfastly denied the allegation, was apparently at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan alongside the woman — who claims she is his girlfriend — when the alleged assault happened.

The woman claims Spitzer choked her when a verbal argument turned into a physical altercation, and the New York Police Department released a statement on Sunday about their investigation of the incident:

“The victim has indicated that the subject is Eliot Spitzer. Through an ongoing investigation, we are attempting to further establish the identity of the subject and the nature of the incident.”

As for Spitzer, his spokeswoman Lisa Linden relayed a very simple message to reporters:

“There is no truth to the allegation.”

There’s another layer to this investigation, too; the woman was taken to the hospital Saturday night because of self-inflicted cuts on her wrists. And, the woman has also apparently left the United States to head home to her native Russia.

This also isn’t Spitzer’s first time in the spotlight of controversy; he resigned as the governor of New York back in 2008 after he was outed as being involved in a high-level prostitution scandal.

He and then-wife Silda Wall divorced in 2014 shortly after.

What do YOU think of these new allegations??
