Lily Allen recently spoke out against the lack of diversity at the BRIT Awards saying grime artists Stormzy and Skepta were overlooked for because “industry figures don’t necessarily care about music, they mostly care about themselves.”
The English singer went on to say:
“It is the awards ceremony Alan Partridge would approve of.”
Partridge is a character played by comedian Steve Coogan and is a parody of British television personalities and the character enjoys music such as Wings and Abba.
So this was clearly a dig at the show being out of touch.
Well James Bay has his own opinions on the matter and isn’t afraid to fire back in response to Lily’s criticism!
The Hold Back the River singer spoke with Metro saying:
“I haven’t seen REO Speedwagon in the nominations, so I don’t know if it’s entirely Partridge.”
Bay went on to say:
“It’s varied nominations. It’s about music. I don’t know why she’s had to go down that route. I haven’t looked closely into all the nominations but it’s interesting she should bring that up. I can’t think of her last album, when she last released something.”
While Stormyz has spoken out about the lack of grime music being recognized saying it’s a “shame”, Harley Sylvester of Rizzle Kicks feels a bit stronger about the issue as he said it “pisses” him off.
