The Olympics are right around the corner and Michael Phelps couldn’t be more excited!

Sure, competing in the world’s biggest sporting event is thrilling, but the REAL reason Phelps is stoked is because it will be the first time his son will get to see him compete at this summer’s Rio games!

The swimmer, who’s expecting his first child with fiancee Nicole Johnson, opened up to Us and talked a bit about fatherhood as well as how his DUI arrest affected him. The 22-time medalist revealed his excitement for his son saying:

“One of the coolest things about being a father going into Rio is that our firstborn has the chance to see my last race ever. I think that’s something that’ll be really special that we’ll be able to share stories with him, you know, from the time he gets old enough to realize, and I’m excited to have a lot of photos and just to share the moments and memories with him growing up as a kid.”

The Olympic star also opened up about his troubled past with alcohol and his plans for staying sober saying:

“Obviously there were a lot of things that I needed to fix. It’s pretty crazy how big of a change I see from not having a drink ├óΓé¼┬ª just because it’s like I see a complete change in my body. I see a complete change in how I am day to day. [I’m] completely clear-headed. ├óΓé¼┬ª It’s just all those small things that really add up and you know for so long without having one, I’m actually happy every day. I’m actually able to be productive every day. I think that’s something that I am very proud of and, you know, I think when I do retire I’ll be able to look back and say that was something that really helped.”

Even though Michael retired once and decided to come back for the Rio games, we think this will be his farewell tour and we wish him the best of luck. Plus, we can’t imagine a better way to go out than having your newborn son cheer you on!

What do you think of the athlete’s mature stance on fatherhood and health?
