In 2008, Robert Downey Jr.‘s breakout turn as Iron Man was so popular it didn’t just lead to two sequels — it put Marvel on track to create something all other studios are trying to replicate — a VERY successful shared universe.
But when Marvel announced Phase 3 of their comic book flicks in 2014 — including sequels for The Avengers, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy — Iron Man 4 was missing!
Many fans wondered if RDJ would EVER be getting another sequel for his beloved character.
Luckily USA Today sat down with RDJ while he was filming the highly anticipated Captain America: Civil War and got the scoop on if we should be expecting another Iron Man sequel!
The highest paid actor in Hollywood dished that even though he’d be willing to play the character as long as the studio allows him, he said of a another solo Iron Man film:
“I don’t think that’s in the cards.”
Robert went on to say, however, that fans looking for another Iron Man flick would be VERY happy with Civil War:
“In a way it’s Cap 3 but for me it’s like my little Iron Man 4. And then it’s back to the thing we all recognize. Everything pulls over to the side of the road when the thunder of an Avengers thing comes through because that’s how it is until it changes. If it changes.”
So this is the closest thing we’re getting to a quadrilogy.
BTW, even though RDJ is going toe-to-toe with Chris Evans in Civil War, the actor wants fans to know they don’t have to worry about his character of becoming a full-on villain. Yet…
“If we’re going to go there, then we’ve got to save it for my swan song. I would still like to keep a general audience and mildly be in their favor somehow.”
Are you bummed there are no plans for an Iron Man 4?!
Make sure you catch Captain America: Civil War when it opens May 6!
