Back in the ’90s, some mainstream shows managed to slip in queer characters on the down low, masking their sexuality with innuendos and other homoerotic undertones.
One example is the hit series Xena: Warrior Princess, which always teased fans that the titular warrior (Lucy Lawless) and her charge Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor) might have been more than just friends!
But with an upcoming reboot of the fantasy series coming up, those subtle undertones will become undeniable overtones!
NBC tapped writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach to pen the pilot for the Xena reboot, and The 100 producer plans to make the chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle a LOT more front and center!
During a Q&A session on Tumblr, the scribe confirmed that the reboot would “fully” explore the relationship between the two leading ladies, writing:
“xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons. there is no reason to bring back xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s. it will also express my view of the world – which is only further informed by what is happening right now – and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.”
It’s such an amazing time for diverse storytelling in TV, and we’re LOVING that LGBT characters are on the screen now more than ever — even if it’s retroactive!
Now we absolutely can’t wait for the Xena reboot!
