Tell us more, tell us more!

Zayn Malik proved he wasn’t just background fodder after being the first One Direction member to go solo, and now that he’s been on his own for a year, he’s spilling even more secrets about his former band.

The 23-year-old covered Complex for the April/May issue, and didn’t hold back when it came to discussing the restrictions that came with being marketed towards a specific demographic!

In fact, during his 1D days Zayn wasn’t even allowed to alter anything about himself, including his personal appearance, saying:

“There were certain restrictions in terms of the way that we could come outside of that young teen boy look├óΓé¼┬ª Mainly my beard, honestly. I wasn’t allowed to keep it. Eventually, when I got older, I rebelled against it, and decided to keep it anyway. That was just because I looked older than the rest of them. That’s one of the things that is now quite cool. I get to keep my beard. I also wanted to dye my hair when I was in the band, but I wasn’t allowed to.”

That seems a bit strict… No wonder he wanted to get a little freedom!

But now that Zayn is able to say whatever he’s thinking in that Mind of Mine, he looks towards one iconic A-Lister for advice — Kanye West! He explained:

“I believe that success follows authenticity. People see through fake sh*t. They don’t want to see that — they want a real person. That’s why Kanye is so successful. He’s speaking the truth, regardless of whomever he offends, he isn’t bothered. That’s admirable.”

Interesting choice for inspiration, Z.

Still, Zayn is aware that fame is fleeting, and even though he’s currently in the prime of his career thanks to Pillowtalk, he already has a plan for the next chapter of his life:

“I want to go to school. I’d love to get a degree in English, or literature — I think I’ll just do a home thing. I’ll get my courses from one of the universities around L.A. and just do home study. It’s always something I’ve wanted to do. I’ve always wanted to get my degree eventually. I want to do that, and hopefully write my next record while I’m doing it.

I’m enjoying [life] right now, being creative. I’m enjoying writing music and doing this. And if it doesn’t work out, I would probably just live a simple life… I’ve done a lot for a 23-year-old. I’d be stupid to complain.”

Sounds like someone has a good head on his shoulders!

While we’re always going to miss Zayn’s presence in 1D, we’re happy he’s so much more comfortable operating as a soloist.

Do U think the next One Direction member to bounce will be as lucky??
