As we’re sure you’re aware, back at the end of March, North Carolina’s Governor Pat McCrory signed House Bill 2, which states that cities in the state can no longer create their own laws regarding banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. BLEH!
Well now it looks like there’s been a pretty big win for people who aren’t bigots as the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday that the NC law essentially violates federal civil rights laws and can’t be enforced. YAY!
Not only that, but the department gave North Carolina state officials until Monday to respond “by confirming that the State will not comply with or implement HB2.”
The JD also ruled that the law violates Title IX of the Civil Rights Act which forbids discrimination in education based on sex. This means that the state could end up losing hundreds of millions of dollars in federal school funding. YIKES! Hopefully these are great incentives for the state to do the RIGHT thing and get rid of the bill!
In response to the Justice Department’s letter, McCrory said Wednesday night that the letter they received was “something we’ve never seen regarding Washington overreach in my lifetime.”
The Governor went on to say:
“This is no longer just a N.C. issue. This impacts every state, every university and almost every employee in the United States of America. All those will have to comply with new definitions of requirements by the federal government regarding restrooms, locker rooms and shower facilities in both the private and public sector.”
Of course there were other politicians who chimed to express their frustrations — and by politicians, we mean Republicans — as House Speaker Tim Moore said that GOP leaders are currently talking with attorneys regarding how to respond to the letter which they seem to believe is “a huge overreach (by) the federal government.”
Moore went on to say:
“It looks an awful lot like politics to me. I guess President Obama, in his final months in office, has decided to take up this ultra-liberal agenda.”
Really?! “Looks an awful lot like politics to me”?! Well the bill looks like a whole bunch of bullsh*t to us!
We’re just happy the Justice Department has stepped in to help try and amend this awful and disgusting law that is clearly bigoted and limits freedom for the LGBT community!
What do you think of the new decision that’s been handed down?!
