In an unexpected move by ABC, Nashville will not be renewed for a fifth season.

The country musical drama featuring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere authentically filmed in Nashville, Tennessee and garnered a loyal fan base over the past four years.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said in a statement:

“We are incredibly disappointed to hear the news that ABC has not renewed the show Nashville for another season. The show has been an enormously successful promotional tool for our city, which is why the state of Tennessee and Metro Nashville were prepared to support production for a fifth season the be filmed here. This is a loss for ABC and for the millions of fans across the world who have grown to love this show. We have enjoyed hosting the cast and crew of the show over the last four years and look forward to future opportunities for film and television production here in Nashville.”

We can’t help but wonder if Miz Panettiere’s rehab announcement on Wednesday was timed in light of the cancellation news and her scheduling opening up. Regardless, we’re happy she’s getting the help she needs!

Here’s to hoping the show will wrap up these crazy story lines efficiently by the end of this season — everything is so up in the air right now! Ugh!
