A photograph is worth a thousand words — but for Ed Sheeran, it might cost millions!
The musician is being sued for $20 million over his 2015 smash hit Photograph for allegedly “verbatim, note-for-note copying” it!
Songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard say Sheeran’s x single ripped off their song Amazing — which was recorded and released as a single by X Factor winner Matt Cardle in 2012.
The lawsuit states the two songs have the same chord progressions and musical notation — particularly the chorus, which allegedly shares 39 identical notes in pitch, rhythmic duration and placement in the measure.
According to a complaint issued by the plaintiffs:
“The songs’ similarities reach the very essence of the work. The similarities go beyond substantial, which is itself sufficient to establish copyright infringement, and are in fact striking. The similarity of words, vocal style, vocal melody, melody, and rhythm are clear indicators, among other things, that Photograph copies Amazing.”
Uh oh. Sounds like Eddy is gonna have a tough time coming out on top of this legal battle!
Even before the lawsuit was issued, suspicious fans have pointed out the striking similarities between the two songs.
